January 2020 Newsletter

The Monthly ROR (Return on Relationship)

Happy New Year! The Wharton Club of the National Capital Region wishes you a health, happiness and success for 2020.

What a Year!

2019 has been an amazing year for our community. Since our official membership launch in February, we’ve had 39 events -- from the widely attended kickoff in April with keynote speaker David Trone, WG’85, founder of Total Wine & More, and Member of the House of Representatives (MD-6th) to our first annual WCNCR-sponsored Walnut Walk. There were many smaller yet meaningful events such as fireside chats, pub nights, affinity group calls and lunches, tours of Glenstone and the SMAAHC.

Here's to More in 2020

2020 will undoubtedly be another eventful year. Our world has seen increasingly fast technological changes in many sectors, from robots, to finance, healthcare, transport, entertainment, food, and of course telecommunication and computing. Recent years have seen an unprecedented number of far-reaching inventions, intimately impacting how we live and work. At the same time, environmental pressure has swelled, and an increasing number of businesses have embraced ethical and mindful change. On the political side, the US will hold presidential elections which will carry their degree of uncertainty. Socially, income disparities increasingly affect western societies and refugee crises in Europe and the Americas loom. Partnering with change and embracing it will undoubtedly be a more successful approach than trying to fight or resist it.

We want our club to be a platform to discuss change and to anticipate how it can affect our professional and personal lives. The Wharton school has embraced innovation at its core, and we want to carry this value throughout our alumni community. At the Wharton Club of the National Capital Region, we are committed to organize outstanding events and captivating discussions to make a stronger community. See our upcoming events below for some examples.

And, as always, we invite you, our wonderful alumni community, to contact us with ideas for affinity groups, speakers, and events.

Thank you for being part of the Wharton National Capital Region alumni group. Here’s to a great 2020 together!

Upcoming Events

Fri., Jan. 10 - WCNCR's new Career Mentor Initiative

#WeAreWharton

Do you remember when you were in school, starting out, as a first-year or freshman, how your classmates in the years above would take you through the ABCs of Wharton life? How the Leadership Fellows would guide your learning team? How the various Clubs did the heavy lifting on all your recruiting prep, ever-present for endless mock interviews? AND THEN, remember how you turned around and did it all for those following behind you, just exactly as had been done for you?

This was always the essence of the Wharton experience... that we help each other. Someone teaches us something; we turn around and pass it on. Today, as alumni of all ages, backgrounds, and career experiences, nothing stops us from reinvesting in this tradition. #WeAreWharton

Many of us have knowledge that is of tremendous value to those who are seeking to advance their careers, looking for new jobs, launching a business, or simply trying to manage the daily stress of modern work life. At other times, we'll need much of the same support.

Therefore, as a benefit to the Wharton Club of the National Capital Region (WCNCR) members, we are launching a Career Mentor Initiative!

Please join us on Friday, January 10, 2020, at the launch event! Enjoy food and drinks, take in the stunning views, and ring in the new year with your fellow Wharton alumni! We're so excited to tell you more about the Initiative. At the event, we'll take you through signing up as a Mentor or Mentee - and if you don't want to be either right now - simply take advantage of the additional FREE career programming we're planning for Members.

Speaking of which, we highly encourage you to join as a Member. Not only will you save on this event but also dozens more, while getting access to the Mentor Initiative's offerings!

Please RSVP soon so that we have an accurate headcount! The event is $5 for Members and $15 for non-members. Become a Member here.

Get Involved

This is YOUR club! Your help makes it better.

Do you have an idea for an event? - A connection to a Wharton professor that you want to share? - An affinity group you’d like to arrange? - A great meeting space you can offer?

We need your help!

YOU are what make our club programming successful, whether it’s your attendance or your ideas and help in coordinating the events. Please check out our Volunteer page to see how you can get involved.

One of our biggest challenges is finding donated meeting spaces where we can have large events. If you have access to a centrally located space that we can use for a nominal fee, please let us know the details! Click here to send us a message.
