In “Climate Restoration: The Only Future that Will Sustain the Human Race,” the MIT-trained, former NASA scientist and entrepreneur Peter Fiekowsky explains why the Paris Accords won’t be enough to prevent more disastrous climate swings. He then lays out a series of technologies now under development that could remove enough CO2 to avert that future.
Fiekowsky and his co-author Carole Douglis write that it’s too late to solve the problem through reducing carbon emissions alone. CO2 levels now stand at 420 parts per million, well above the 350 ppm cited by climate scientist Dr. James Hansen as the likely safe limit for that greenhouse gas. CO2 levels will continue to rise until 2050, reaching 460 ppm - provided we are successful in capping CO2 emissions. It would then remain at that level because CO2 stays in the atmosphere for thousands of years.
Peter Fiekowsky is an MIT-educated physicist and engineer, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a social innovator. He has worked at NASA and the Fairchild/ Schlumberger Artificial Intelligence Lab in Palo Alto, Calif; taught at MIT; and developed his own machine vision company, Automated Visual Inspection LLC (AVI).
He holds 27 patents and is on the board of Solar Capex, a fintech company to help complete the global transition to 100 percent clean energy by 2040 by tripling the rate of investment in solar projects.
